Bone Markings
3 types: depressions, openings and projections
Depressions
Bone marking category; clefts where one bone meets another sturcutre (blood/blood vessel)
Openings
Holes taht allow blood vessel and nerves to travel through bone; allow access of inner ear
Projections
Bony extensions of different shpaes and sizes to provide locations for attachemnt (muscls, tendons, and ligaments)
, fit into depressions or other bones for stabilization
Facet
Type of depression that is a shallow convex or concave surface for two bones to articulate
Fossa/fossae
type of depression, indentation in a bone to fit another strucutre
fovea
type of depression, shallow pit
groove
type of depression, long indentation along whihc a narrow structure travels
canal
type of opening; tunnel through abone
fissure
type of opening; narrow slit in a bone or between adjacent parts of bones
foramen/foramina
type of opening; hole in a bone
crest
type of projection; narrow ridge or raised edge
head
type of projection; round projection from a bone’s epiphysis to form a joint
tubercle and tuberosity
type of projection; small, rounded bony projection; tuberosity is a large tubercle
epicondyle
type of projection; small projection usually proximal to a condyle
process
type of projection; prominent bony bump (in scapula, coracoid process)
spine
type of projection; sharp process(in scapula, spine)
protuberance
type of projection; outgrowth from a bone (in occipital bone, external occipital protuberance)
trochanter
type of projection; large proejction only on femur to attach hip and thigh muscles
Line
type of projection; long, narrow ridge (on femor, linea aspera)
Notch
Type of depression; v-like shaped and usually on edges of bone
Condyle
Type of projection; rounded, smooth and knuckle-shaped to articulate with another bone
