Researcher controls valid of X, then observes Y (addressing reverse causality)
Researcher holds Z constant while changing X (addressing confounders)

Participants are randomly assigned to groups, ensuring that characteristics are balanced across groups, so confounding variables (observable or not) are held constant
Arbitrary Assignment
Basically divides the room in half to determine who is in the treatment and control groups

Mixes everyone around to determine who is in the treatment and control groups
