Triple Entente: Britain, France, Russia Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy.

Why was the war fought in trenches?

Belgium and northern France are flat and provide little cover for soldiers. Digging a trench was the only way to create a defensive position.

Around the world, but mostly on the Western Front in Europe between Germany and Britain/France, and on the Eastern Front in Europe between Germany/ Austria-Hungary and Russia.
