Explain the term oxidation state (number)
A measure of the number of electrons an atom uses to bond with atoms of a different element.
Explain the term oxidation
The loss of electrons, or an increase in oxidation number.
Explain the term oxidising agent
A reagent that oxidises another species by accepting electrons (and is itself reduced).
Explain the term reduction
The gain of electrons, or a decrease in oxidation number.
Explain the term reducing agent
A reagent that reduces another species by donating electrons (and is itself oxidised).
Explain the term redox
A reaction in which both oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously.
Explain the term disproportionation
A reaction where the same element is simultaneously oxidised and reduced.
Explain the term displacement reaction
A redox reaction where a more reactive halogen oxidises the halide ion of a less reactive halogen.
