Reproductive cells used in sexual reproduction; sperm and ova (eggs) are the male and female gametes.
Sex Cells (Gametes)
Small, motile male reproductive cells produced in the testes.
Sperm
Part of the sperm containing the nucleus and genetic material.
Sperm Head
Part of the sperm containing many mitochondria that produce energy for movement.
Sperm Midpiece
Part of the sperm that propels it forward.
Sperm Tail
Large female reproductive cells produced in the ovaries.
Ova (Eggs)
Part of the egg containing the genetic material.
Egg Nucleus
Layer of protective cells surrounding the egg.
Corona Radiata
Protective outer layer surrounding the egg.
Zona Pellucida
A type of cell division that produces four haploid reproductive cells from a diploid cell.
Meiosis
A cell containing two sets of chromosomes.
Diploid Cell
A cell containing one set of chromosomes.
Haploid Cell
Reduces the chromosome number by half so sperm and eggs can combine during sexual reproduction without doubling the chromosome number.
Purpose of Meiosis
Pituitary hormone that stimulates reproductive functions, including sperm production in males and follicle development in females.
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Pituitary hormone that stimulates reproductive functions, including testosterone production in males and ovulation in females.
Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
Gland that produces FSH and LH, which regulate reproductive functions.
Pituitary Gland
