1/15
A comprehensive vocabulary review of core CNA concepts, protocols, dietary modifications, and intake/output procedures covered in HSC 070: Nutrition and Hydration.
Clear Liquid Diet
A food consistency modification consisting of coffee, tea, clear broth, gelatin, ginger ale, apple juice, grape juice, popsicles, and ice chips.
Full Liquid Diet
A food consistency modification consisting of orange juice, milk, pudding, plain ice cream, strained creamed soups, strained cereals, and yogurt.
Soft/Pureed/Mechanical Soft Diet
A food consistency modification consisting of tender chopped or ground meat and poultry, well-cooked peeled fruits and vegetables, toast, fish, and cottage cheese.
Clothing Protector
A protective dining garment used for residents during mealtime that must never be referred to as a bib.
Semi-Fowlers Position (Tube Feeding)
Positioning the resident with the head of the bed (HOB) elevated to at least 30∘ during tube feeding and for 30min afterwards.
Meal Intake Reporting Threshold
The clinical benchmark requiring a CNA to notify the nurse when a resident consumes less than 50% of their meal.
Standard Food Intake Charting Percentages
The facility food intake values typically documented as 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, or 0%.
Nutritional Deficit Risk Signs
Observable warning signs including weight loss, supplement avoidance, sudden intake shifts, eating less than 75% of meals, difficulty chewing or swallowing, mood changes, or wandering out of the dining room.
Graduated Container
A marked measuring vessel into which urine from bedpans, urinals, commodes, toilet hats, and Foley catheters is poured to determine fluid output.
Incontinence Volume Estimation
The protocol for recording fluid output for an incontinent resident by tallying the frequency of occurrences and estimating volume as small, moderate, or large.
Fluid Intake and Output (I&O) Protocol
The process of recording fluids consumed and excreted at mealtimes and across shifts, which is totaled per shift and for each 24-hour timeframe.
Dehydration Management Protocol
The CNA procedure requiring immediate reporting of any signs or symptoms of dehydration to the nurse along with taking a complete set of vital signs.
Tube Feeding Complications to Report
Observable symptoms requiring nurse notification, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal distension, wet breath sounds, insertion site redness or leakage, and tube displacement.
Dependent Feeding Guidelines
Techniques for assisting a dependent resident to eat and drink, including sitting at eye level, alternating solids and liquids, identifying food items, offering seasoning, wiping the face, and conversing.
Age-Related Nutrition and Hydration Challenges
Physiological changes in older adults including a reduced calorie requirement with constant or increased nutrient needs, higher fracture and muscle weakness risk, constipation, altered taste and smell, and decreased saliva production.
Milliliter to Cubic Centimeter Equivalence
The metric volume equivalence used in healthcare fluid measurement where 1ml=1cc.
