Mannich reaction
Reactants: enolizable carbonyl compound, formaldehyde and a primary or secondary amine.
Product: β-amino carbonyl compound.
Key mechanism: formation of an iminium electrophile, followed by attack of the enol/enolate.
Exam trap: distinguish it from aldol condensation; the Mannich reaction introduces an aminoalkyl group.
