Anatomy
Refers to the structure and organization of the brain, including brain regions, size, shape, and connections between structures. Examples include identifying the location of the hippocampus or examining gray and white matter.
Physiology / activity / function
Refers to brain function and how neurons communicate or show activity, including electrical signals and changes in brain activity. Examples include using EEG to examine electrical activity or fMRI to examine changes in brain activity.
Temporal resolution
How precisely a method can measure changes in brain activity over time. Applies to activity and changes over time.
Spatial resolution
How precisely a method can identify where something is located in the brain.
Lesion
Damage to or destruction of a specific area of the brain. Lesions can be studied to understand the function of a particular brain region.
Gene knockout
Removing or disabling a specific gene to study its function.
Gene knockin
Adding a specific gene or replacing an existing gene with another.
Transgenic organism
An organism that has a gene from another species inserted into its DNA. Example: mice modified with fluorescent proteins that make them glow.
