what is the cell cycle?
the highly ordered sequence of events that takes place in a cell, resulting in division of the nucleus and the formation of 2 genetically identical daughter cells
why do cells divide on a regular basis?
to bring about growth and asexual reproduction
describe the stages of the cell cycle
- period of non-cell division called interphase
- period of active cell division by mitosis

what happens during the M phase of the cell cycle?
metaphase checkpoint - mitosis and cytokinesis
What happens during the G1 phase of the cell cycle?
gap phase 1: cell grows and new organelles and proteins are made
what happens during the G1 checkpoint of the cell cycle?
checks that chemicals needed for replication are present and for any damage to DNA before entering S-phase
What happens during the S phase of interphase?
synthesis: DNA replication, ready to divide by mitosis
What happens during the G2 phase of the cell cycle?
gap phase 2: cell keeps growing and proteins needed for cell division are made
What happens during the G2 checkpoint of the cell cycle?
the cell checks whether all the DNA has been replicated correctly and without any damage. if it has, the cell can enter mitosis
what is the M checkpoint of the cell cycle?
spindle assembly checkpoint, check for alignment of chromosomes
What is apoptosis?
programmed cell death
when does apoptosis take place?
if any of the checks during the cell cycle fail

1. prophase

what happens during prophase in mitosis?
- chromosomes condense (become shorter and fatter)
- centrioles move to the poles forming the spindle
- nuclear envelope/membrane breaks down
- nucleolus disappears
what happened during metaphase in mitosis?
- chromosomes (each with 2 chromatids) line up along the equator attached to spindle fibres by their centromeres
what happens during anaphase in mitosis?
- centromeres divide separating the sister chromatids
- spindle fibres contract, pulling chromatids to the poles (centromeres first)
what happens during telophase in mitosis?
- chromosomes uncoil
- nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes
where does cell division occur in plants?

- this maintains the correct chromosome number each generation (if the no. of chromosomes didn't halve, it would double each generation)

- crossing over of non-sister chromatids during prophase 1
- random arrangement & segregation (splitting) of bivalents (homologous pair of chromosomes) during metaphase 1

- random mutation can occur, but this is NOT a valid explanation for why meiosis causes genetic variation
- the process of fertilisation also increases genetic variation bc it is a random process, whereby 2 genetically different sex cells fuse together
