Pros and Cons of early intervention for delayed language development in toddlers?
Pros
Early screening and intervention that aim to prevent language, speech, and communication disorders
Secondary preventive function: helping to minimize later effects on learning, even when the more basic oral language problems resolve
Cons
May increase parental stress, thinking that there is something wrong with their child, especially because even late-talking children can and mostly do catch up to their peers.
What is meant by “children with emerging language” in this chapter?
the era in development in which conventional words are beginning to appear as viable forms of communication
producing single words, and beginning to combine words into two-word utterances and simple sentences
typically around 18-36 months
What is involved in “family centered” intervention for toddlers and why is it important?
understand what the parents are hoping for their child to get out of intervention
discussing expectations and possible outcomes
including familys observations in the assessment
find ways for the family to be active and involved in intervention
identify normal routines and enviornments
review progress
work with family to find ways to encourporate intervention and naturalistic learning oppurtunites into everyday life
All are important becuase as an SLP we are only seeing the child 1 or 2 times per week therefore majority of te intervention and praactice wil occur in the home, making it important for families to understnad and agree with what their child will be participiating in, in order to maximize therapy affects.
