Principles

Unity ( Harmony)

A sense of "oneness" within a work of art achieved through agreement between elements.

Variety (Contrast)

Differences present within a work of art.

Balance (Visual weight)

Even distribution of visual weight in a composition.

Symmetrical Balance

Achieved by creating two even halves in a composition using a central, vertical axis.

Asymmetrical Balance

Distribution of different shapes and values in each half to balance the composition.

Radial Balance

Arrangement of elements that "radiate" from a specific origin within the composition.

Emphasis (Dominance or Focal Point)

Area in a work where great attention is focused, also known as Dominance or Focal Point.

Proportion

Size relationship or comparison of parts to the whole.

Scale

Size relationship of an object compared to other objects in its environment.

Rhythm (Movement pr repetition)

Directed eye travel in a composition through movement or repetition of visual elements.

Economy

Distillation of an image or composition for clarity, based on the concept of "Less is More."

Ex. “Guernica”

An abstract work like Picasso’s painting, “Guernica”, uses the principle of economy to make an impact on the viewer
