Norma Frontalis
The anterior view of the skull, which includes superiorly the frontal bone and inferiorly the facial skeleton (orbits, nasal region, zygomatic bones, maxilla, and mandible).
Ethmoid Bone
A skull bone that forms the roof of the nasal cavities and the posteromedial portion of the orbits.
Piriform Aperture
The anterior nasal opening bounded superiorly by the two nasal bones and laterally/inferiorly by the two maxillary bones.
Nasal Conchae
Three bony scroll-like structures (superior, middle, inferior) inside the nasal cavity crucial for humidifying and bringing air into the pulmonary system.
Mandible
The lower jaw bone consisting of a horseshoe-shaped body, angles, and a pair of flat rami.
Coronoid Process
The process located anteriorly on each ramus of the mandible.
Condylar Process
The process located posteriorly on each ramus of the mandible that articulates with the temporal bone at the mandibular fossa to form the TMJ.
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
The joint formed by the articulation of the condylar process of the mandible with the temporal bone at the mandibular fossa.
Norma Occipitalis
The posterior view of the skull featuring landmarks such as the external occipital protuberance, superior nuchal line, and inferior nuchal line.
Atlas (C1)
The ring-shaped atypical first cervical vertebra that supports the head, lacks a vertebral body and spinous process, and transfers weight to Axis (C2).
Axis (C2)
The second atypical cervical vertebra featuring the dens (odontoid process) and a bifid spinous process, transmitting load from the head and atlas to the remainder of the cervical spine.
Dens (Odontoid Process)
A tooth-like upward projection on Axis (C2) that articulates with the facet for dens on the anterior arch of Atlas (C1).
Carotid Sinus
A dilatation in the carotid arterial system containing receptors that monitor changes in blood pressure, innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX).
Carotid Body
A structure containing receptors responsible for detecting changes in blood chemistry (oxygen content), innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) and the vagus nerve (CN X).
Vertebral Artery
An artery entering the C6 transverse foramina and traveling up to C1, piercing the tectorial membrane in the cranium to become the basilar artery.
External Jugular Vein
A superficial vein beginning in the substance of the parotid gland at the angle of the mandible and running vertically toward the middle of the clavicle at the posterior border of the SCM.
Anterior Jugular Vein
A superficial vein beginning near the hyoid bone, passing deep to the SCM to open into the termination of the external jugular vein, connected by the venous jugular arch, and containing no valves.
Venous Jugular Arch
The transverse trunk near the hyoid bone that communicates between the two anterior jugular veins.
Internal Jugular Vein
A deep vein of the neck that joins the subclavian vein posterior to the sternal end of the clavicle to form the right and left brachiocephalic veins.
Lateral Vascular Compartment
A anatomical compartment of the neck containing the carotid vessels, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve.
Vertebral Compartment
A neck compartment containing the cervical vertebrae, spinal cord, cervical spinal nerves, and muscles associated with the cervical vertebrae.
