Cultural Competence
An ongoing process whereby nurses strive to work within the client's cultural context.
Cultural Humility
The ability to let go of stereotypes and assess the cultural dimensions of each patient, acknowledging what you do not know.
Cultural Safety
Enables safe care defined by those receiving that care, addressing unequal power relations.
Colonialism
Occurs when a foreign power rules over a nation, imposing its values and beliefs.
Race
A socially constructed category to classify humankind based on common ancestry and physical characteristics.
Racism
A complex system of racial hierarchies asserting that one group is superior to others.
Antiracism
A conscious decision to make equitable choices that promote equity and challenge racism.
Equity
The situation in which everyone is treated fairly according to their needs.
Diversity
The presence of people from many different groups within society.
Inclusion
The act of allowing and treating various types of people fairly and equally.
Cultural Awareness
A beginning step towards understanding differences, requiring self-assessment and reflection.
Cultural Sensitivity
Recognition of differences between cultures and their reflection in communication and relationships.
Culturally Sensitive Care
Understanding oneself and the other to effectively bridge gaps in caregiving.
Marginalization
The process by which certain groups or individuals are pushed to the edges of society, often resulting in limited access to resources.
Power Dynamics
The ways in which power is negotiated and exercised between individuals within social interactions or institutions.
Structural Violence
A form of violence where social structures or institutions harm individuals by preventing them from meeting their basic needs.
