Acquaintances
individuals with whom you interact regularly but may not consider friend
Friendships
a significant relationship between two people
Platonic friendship
friendships with a member of the opposite gender in which there is affection but the two people are not considered a couple
Casual friendships
a relationship between peers who share something in common
Close friends
Have strong emotional ties and feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, experiences, and feelings
Cliques
a small circle of friends usually with similar backgrounds or tastes, who exclude people viewed as outsiders
Prejudice
making assumptions or judgments about an individual without really know him or her
Stereotype
an exaggerated or an oversimplified belief about an entire group of people, such as an ethnic or religious group or gender
Peer Pressure
The influence that people your age may have on you
Role model
when you use positive peer pressure to influence someone in a healthful way
Harassment
persistently annoying others. May include name calling, teasing, or bullying.
Manipulation
an indirect, dishonest way to control or influence others.
Assertive
standing up for your rights in a firm but positive way
Refusal skills
techniques and strategies that help you say no effectively when faced with something that you don’t want to do or that goes against your values
Passive
people have a tendency to give up, give in, or back down without standing up for their own rights and needs
Aggressive
people are overly forceful, pushy, hostile, or otherwise attacking in their approach
Infatuation
exaggerated feelings of passion for another person
Affection
a feeling of fondness for someone
Jealousy
an uncomfortable emotion typically triggered by a perceived threat to something you value, such as a relationship, status, or affection
Attraction
Physical and emotional connection that draws people together; also known as chemistry
Closeness
Happens when two people share special feelings and thoughts that they do not share with others
Commitment
A promise to be exclusive, or romantically involved only with your dating partner, including an agreement to work through problems instead of ending the relationship
Exclusive
term that describes being romantically involved with only one partner
Sexual Assault
The act of forcing someone into sexual activity that he or she does not want
Curfew
a set time at which you must be home at night
Abstinence
a deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behaviors, including sexual behavior before marriage and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD’s)
infections spread from person to person through sexual contact
Priorities
those goals tasks, and activities that you judge to be more important than others
Self-control
a person’s ability to use responsibility to override emotions
