Racial Formations
The sociohistorical processes involved in constructing what we know as race, particularly in the United States.
Hypo-descent
A rule that requires individuals to be classified as belonging to the subordinate group if they have any known nonwhite ancestry.
Racialization
The extension of racial meaning to previously unclassified relationships, social practices, or groups.
Racial ideology
The set of beliefs and values that inform and justify the organization of society along racial lines.
Race consciousness
An awareness of the social significance of race and the implications of racial identity.
Biological determinism
The belief that biological factors such as genetics determine cultural or social traits.
Social construction of race
The idea that race is created and defined by society rather than being rooted in biology.
Pass for white
The act of a nonwhite person presenting themselves as white to evade racial discrimination.
Cultural dominance
The imposition of the values and norms of one culture over others, often in context of race.
Institutional patterns
The established practices within institutions that perpetuate racial classification and inequality.
Racial etiquette
A set of unwritten social rules that govern interactions based on racial perceptions.
