Proprioception
The ability to perceive the position and movement of body parts, and to sense force, heaviness, and tension of muscles internally.
Proprioceptors
Special mechanoreceptors located in the locomotor system that provide information about joint position and movement.
Muscle spindle receptors
Receptors that are sensitive to the stretching of muscles.
Golgi tendon organs
Receptors that respond to the tension of tendons.
Joint receptors
Receptors that signal the actual position of joints.
Efferent copy
Internal signals that predict the consequences of a motor command and contribute to proprioception.
Rubber hand illusion (RHI)
A psychological phenomenon where synchronous tactile and visual input can lead to a modified feeling of body ownership.
Proprioceptive accuracy
The degree to which a person can accurately perceive proprioceptive information.
Joint position reproduction test
A method of measuring proprioceptive accuracy by reproducing a guided joint position with eyes closed.
Proprioceptive training
A type of training aimed at improving proprioceptive accuracy and movement regulation.
Power posing
An expansive body position that can enhance feelings of power and cause behavioral and hormonal changes.
Vestibular information
Sensory information concerning balance and spatial orientation, primarily related to the inner ear.
Tactile input
Sensory information received through the skin, which can affect proprioception and body ownership.
Motor performance
The ability to execute physical tasks, which is positively associated with proprioceptive accuracy.
Integrative sensory processing
The combination of information from multiple sensory modalities to enhance perception and motor control.
Postural stability
The ability to maintain a stable posture, important for motor functioning and preventing falls.
