What is ablation?
The destruction of abnormal or excessive tissue by melting, vaporizing, or eroding.
What is circumcision?
The surgical removal of the prepuce (foreskin), in which all or part of the foreskin may be removed.
What is enucleation?
The excision of a whole organ or mass without cutting into it.
What is a hydrocelectomy?
The surgical removal of a fluid-filled sac around the testicle that causes scrotal swelling (hydrocele).
How is laser surgery defined?
The use of a focused beam of light to excise or vaporize abnormal tissue and to control bleeding, used in a variety of noninvasive and minimally invasive procedures.
What are two common types of laser surgery used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?
Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate gland (HoLEP) and photoselective vaporization of the prostate gland (PVP).
What are minimally invasive surgical treatments (MISTs) for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)?
Procedures for benign prostatic hyperplasia characterized by fewer side effects, outpatient (office-based) locations, and shorter recovery times, though limited data exists regarding long-term success rates and need for retreatment.
What are two examples of minimally invasive surgical treatments (MISTs)?
Prostatic urethral lift (PUL) and water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT).
What is morcellation?
Cutting or grinding solid tissue into smaller pieces for removal.
How is robotic surgery performed?
Using small surgical instruments attached to a computer and operated by the surgeon from a console several feet from the operating table.
What is sterilization?
A surgical procedure that prevents pregnancy by preventing either the ability of the female to conceive or of the male to induce conception.
What is transurethral incision of the prostate gland (TUIP)?
A surgical procedure that widens the urethra by making a few small incisions in the bladder neck and the prostate gland, with no prostate tissue removed.
Under what circumstance may TUIP be used instead of TURP?
When the prostate gland is less enlarged.
What is transurethral resection of the prostate gland (TURP)?
The surgical removal of pieces of prostate gland tissue by using an instrument inserted through the urethra, leaving the capsule intact.
When is transurethral resection of the prostate gland (TURP) usually performed?
When the enlarged prostate gland interferes with urination.
