Study of Risk and Resilience in Child Development
A field of study aiming to identify which risk factors are associated with and predictive of negative developmental outcomes.
Predictors of Risk
Factors that increase the likelihood of less than ideal outcomes, without guaranteeing that such outcomes will occur.
Stress
The imbalance between resources required to deal with a situation and current resources.
Positive Stress
Brief increases in heart rate and mild elevations in stress hormone levels.
Tolerable Stress
Serious, temporary stress responses that are buffered by supportive relationships.
Toxic Stress
Prolonged activation of stress response systems in the absence of protective relationships.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)
Stressful or traumatic events occurring before age 18—including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction—that can lead to long-term health risks.
Index of Cumulative Risk
A framework demonstrating that developmental risk increases progressively as the total number of ACEs increases.
Resilience
The capacity to withstand or recover from significant disturbances and continue to function or develop in a healthy or normative way.
Agency and Mastery Motivation
An individual resilience attribute involving control over one's actions and the belief to try again with tasks until successful.
Two-Eyed Seeing Perspective
A perspective grounded in Indigenous methodologies used alongside a qualitative, strengths-based case study approach.
Photovoice
A qualitative, participatory research method based on photography-based storytelling.
