Ryrie's caution regarding election
"No human mind will ever harmonize sovereignty and free will..."
McCune's caution regarding election
"Election is both simple and complex" (need both faith and humility)
Election
An act of God before creation in which he chooses some people to be saved, not on account of any foreseen merit in them, but only because of his sovereign good pleasure
Corporate View
Election View: Corporate body is composed of many individuals; God chose/elected the church, not a person individually; When you become saved, you become a part of the universal church and are then considered elect.
Elect-in-Christ View
Election View: Those who are in Christ, the body of Christ, are elect; if Christ is elect and chosen, then those who are in Christ are too
Election-to-Sanctification View
Election View: Holds that one is elected so growth through sanctification can take place, and elected for adoption, and elected for good works
Election-Based-on-Forseen View (Foreknowledge View)
Election View: God in heaven looks down through the "quarters of time" and based on what man does, then chooses him based on his decisions
Agnosticism View
Election View: Leaves the issue of election in the realm of ignorance; "can't know"
Personal Election View
Election View: God chose the individual based on God's own good pleasure; God made this choice before creation; Unconditional; Strictly His sovereign good pleasure; This seems to be the correct view
Prescience View (Foreknowledge View)
Election View: God's election is based on His foresight or prior knowledge of what would happen; involves a personal choice and God chooses to involve a person to be able to react
Personal Election
In this view, foreknowledge carries the idea of personal choice, special regard for a dn care, and intimate knowledge
Proverbs 27:23
"Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds."="look well to" defined as "set your heart to" or "give careful attention to"-"the latter verb literally says, "direct your heart." To know is to direct the heart or to pay attention." (McCune)
1. Isaac over Ishmael
2. Jacob over Esau
The two illustrations Paul uses to support election in Romans 9:6-13
Isaac over Ishmael
Point: Just because people are born in the "right" family doesn't mean that they are a child of God
Jacob over Esau
Point: Neither had made a right or wrong choice-shows the nature of God's election, God's call, which is purely His choice
God has the freedom to choose
Who determines who will receive God's mercy in Romans 9:14-18?
"By no means" or "God forbid"
What is Paul's response to the question of God's fairness in Romans 9:14-18?
-All deserve to go to hell, and no one should be allowed to go to heaven (apart from Christ)
-God will have mercy on whom He wills
How does one answer the question of God's fairness?
Pottery
Illustration Paul uses in Romans 9:19-21 to support his answer on god's fairness
Paul's pottery illustration
As the clay has no right to question the potter, man has no right to question God
The subject acts on itself or in its own behalf, or the stress is placed on the subject; translates the key phrase as, "God chose (for himself)"
What is the significance of the middle voice in Ephesians 1:4 for the word "chose"?
Total Depravity
As a result of the fall, the entire human race is affected; all humanity is dead in trespasses and sin. Man is unable to save himself
Unconditional Election
Because man is dead in sin, he is unable to initiate response to God; therefore, in eternity past God elected certain people to salvation. Election and predestination are unconditional; they are not based on man's response
Limited Atonement
Because God determined that certain ones should be saved as a result of God's unconditional election, He determined that Christ should die for the elect. All whom God has elected and Christ died for will be saved
Irresistible Grace
Those whom God elected and Christ died for, God draws to Himself through irresistible grace. God makes man willing to come to Him. When God calls, man responds
Perseverance of the Saints
The precise ones God has elected and drawn to Himself through the holy spirit will persevere in faith. None whom God elected will be lost; they are eternally secure
Clarification on Limited Atonement
-Unlimited atonement means it is offered to all, does not mean everyone will go to Heaven, but everyone has that choice
-Limited in application in the sense you have to accept Christ to plug into the atonement
Clarification on Election
-Is taught within the context of the offer of salvation and the decision either for or against it
-Man is held accountable for his own condemnation to hell
-One must always keep in mind the balance between God's sovereignty and human responsibility
-Is presented with the purpose of its moral and spiritual result
-Is a comfort to believers
-Is a reason for thankfulness and praise to God
-Is a motivating factor in witnessing to the lost
