Antisemitism
A practice of discriminating against Jewish people, rooted in treating them as an inferior race and blaming them for the death of Jesus.
Inferior Race
A classification used by Christian Europeans who rejected Jewish religion and culture, treating Jewish people as lesser than others.
Ghettos
Crowded minority communities in foreign sections of cities where Jews were forced to live and denied equal access to food, clothing, and jobs.
Adolf Hitler
Leader of the Nazi party who came to power in Germany in the 1930s, blamed Jews for economic problems after World War I, and removed legal protections for Jewish citizens.
Yellow Star of David
A required badge that every Jewish person was forced to wear starting in 1941.
Death Camps
Killing facilities featuring gas chambers designed to exterminate thousands of people at one time.

A special bond or link between things, like how Jewish people feel linked to the land of Israel.
Concentration Camps
Places where Jewish people and others were imprisoned and killed during the Holocaust.
Palestine
A region containing areas like the Gaza Strip and the West Bank where Britain officially took control as a mandate in July 1922.
Persecution
Cruelty, torture, discrimination, or hate directed at individuals because of their beliefs, appearance, or religion.
Demographic Ratio in 1920
The proportion of population in Palestine consisting of one Jew to every ten Arabs.

The proportion of population in Palestine consisting of one Jew to every two Arabs due to waves of Jewish immigration.
Zionism
A movement that emerged in Europe with the goal of establishing a Jewish homeland in Palestine by encouraging Jews to return to their original land.

A Hungarian who started modern Zionism in 1897.
Western Wall
The remaining structure of an ancient temple destroyed in 70 CE, located in present-day Israel.

Hatred or unfair treatment towards Jewish people.
Prejudice
Treating someone unfairly just because of who they are or what group they belong to.
Ottoman Empire
A vast empire that stretched across parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia, which collapsed after siding with the Central Powers in World War I.
League of Nations Mandate Authority
The international organization that granted France and Great Britain control over partitioning former Ottoman territory after World War I.
French Partitioning Territories
Middle Eastern and North African regions controlled by France after WWI, including Syria, Lebanon, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.
British Partitioning Territories
Middle Eastern regions assigned to British supervision after WWI, including Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, and parts of Saudi Arabia.
Primary Motivator for European Partitioning
The desire of Great Britain and France to gain immediate control over oil profits in the Middle East.
Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988)
An eight-year conflict between neighboring Middle Eastern nations fought primarily over disputed, oil-rich territory.
Kurds
A large stateless ethnic group in the Middle East divided across Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Iraq, facing severe persecution.

The desire of Kurdish people to have their own nation or country.
Ethnic Group
A group of people who share the same culture, language, and sometimes.
Independence
The state of being free from control by another country or group.
Suppression
The act of stopping or preventing something from happening, often forcefully.
Generations
All the people born and living around the same time, often used to describe how things are passed down over time.
Decades
Periods of ten years.
