what is the job of the axon?
where the cell signals transmit to another cell or target tissue
what are dendrites?
they are short extensions that receive information
what do sensory receptors do?
sense changes through sensory receptors
what do motor receptors do?
they respond the stimuli - eg. glands and muscles
what do integrative receptors do?
they analyze incoming sensory receptors and decide what sensory information is needed to be focused on
eg. when you put on a fuzzy sweater you aren’t focused on it all day
what are the components of the nervous system?
brain
spinal cord
nerves
sensory receptors
what are the 2 divisions of the nervous system?
the central nervous system
the peripheral nervous system
what does the central nervous system contain
the brain and spinal cord
what does the peripheral nervous system contain?
sensory receptors and nerves
what are sensory receptors?
they are specialized cells that can detect things like pain, temp etc
what are nerves?
a bundle of axons and their sheaths that connect the CNS to sensory receptors
how many cranial nerves do we have and where are they found?
they originated in the brain and there are 12 of them
how many spinal nerves are there and where do they orginate?
31 and they originate from the spinal cord
what is a ganglion?
collection of neurons of cell bodies outside the CNS
What are plexus?
an extensive network of axons and sometimes neuron cell bodies located outside of CNS
what are the 2 divisions of the PNS
sensory and motor
what are sensory receptors also called
afferent
what do sensory receptors do?
they transmit action potentials from receptors to the CNS
what do motor receptors do?
they transmit action potentials from the CNS to effctors like muscles
what is the motor receptor also known as?
effrent
what are the divisions of the motor receptors
somatic nervous system
autonomic nervous system
what does the somatic nervous system control?
skeletal muscle - you are able to control the somatic nervous system
what does the autonomic nervous system control
heart, smooth mussels and glands - things you cant conrtol
what are the two divisions of sensory receptors
general senses
special senses
the role of sensory receptors is to take external environment and transmit it to our internal enviornment
what do general senses do/control?
they are receptors throughout many parts of the body that control pressure, temp etc
what do sensory receptors do?
they are specific receptors in specific organs eg. vision (only located in the eye)
what kind of
