Four tissue types
Epithelial, connective, muscle, nerve
Apical (epithelial)
Faces the outside world or the lumen
Basal (epithelial)
Faces deeper body cells
Epithelial layers
Simple (one layer) or stratified (many layers)
Epithelial shapes
Squamous, cuboidal, columnar
Epithelial glands
Secrete substances
Exocrine glands
Secrete through ducts; unicellular or multicellular, simple or compound
Endocrine glands
Secrete hormones into the blood
Connective tissue functions
Strengthens, protects organs, maintains organ shape, framework for muscles to pull
Connective tissue fibers
Collagen, reticular, elastic
Classes of connective tissue
Connective tissue proper, cartilage, bone, blood
Tensile strength vs. elasticity
Tensile strength = collagen fibers; elasticity = elastic fibers
Areolar tissue
Loose connective tissue under epithelium
Reticular tissue
Loose connective tissue in the spleen
Adipose tissue
Loose connective tissue that is fat
Regular dense connective tissue
Tendons
Irregular dense connective tissue
Dermis
Dense elastic connective tissue
Large artery walls
Chondroblasts
Cartilage-making cells
Hyaline cartilage
Ends of long bones
Elastic cartilage
External ear
Fibrocartilage
Intervertebral discs
Bone (osseous) tissue
Protects organs and supports the body
Muscle tissue types
Skeletal, cardiac, smooth
Nerve tissue
Central and peripheral nervous system; made of neurons and glial cells
