Comprehensive vocabulary flashcards covering copyright laws, document setup, file formats, layer workflows, typography, tonal adjustments, vector tools, and Adobe Generative AI.
Public Domain
Creative works whose intellectual property rights have expired, been forfeited, or expressly waived (such as works published prior to 1924), allowing them to be freely used without permission or royalties.
Intellectual Property (IP)
Legal protections granted for creations of the mind, including literary and artistic works, designs, symbols, names, and inventions protected by copyright, trademark, or patent laws.
Fair Use / Fair Dealing
Legal doctrines that permit limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission under specific circumstances, such as criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research.
Creative Commons
A non-profit licensing framework that allows creators to standardise and grant public permissions to share and use their creative work under specific conditions (e.g., Attribution, Non-Commercial, ShareAlike).
Commercial Use vs. Non-Commercial / Editorial Use
Commercial use involves utilizing an asset in marketing, advertising, sales promotion, or profit generation; non-commercial or editorial use is restricted to news, educational, personal, or non-promotional contexts.
Model Release
A signed legal contract between a photographer and an identifiable individual depicted in an image, granting permission to publish or commercially distribute their image.
Location Release
A signed legal authorization from a property owner permitting commercial photography or video production on private property or restricted public spaces.
Rights-Managed (RM) Licensing
A stock photography license that grants explicit, limited rights based on factors such as duration of use, media type, geographic region, and industry exclusivity.
Canvas Size vs. Image Size
Image Size scales the entire document including existing pixel content; Canvas Size alters the underlying workspace dimensions around the content without resizing existing pixels.
Aspect Ratio
The proportional relationship between an image's width and its height (e.g., 16:9, 4:3, 1:1).
Resolution (PPI vs. DPI)
Pixels Per Inch (PPI) defines digital screen resolution (standard web default is 72PPI); Dots Per Inch (DPI) defines physical printer ink density (standard commercial print default is 300DPI).
RGB (Red, Green, Blue)
An additive color model designed for digital displays and screen media.
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black)
A subtractive color model used for physical print production.
Gamut
The full range of colors that can be accurately produced or displayed by a specific color space, mode, or output device.
Bit Depth
The amount of color and tonal data saved for every individual pixel in an image (e.g., 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit); higher bit depth preserves smooth color transitions and dynamic range.
Iterative Design
A design methodology based on a cyclical process of prototyping, testing, analyzing, and refining a graphic design project based on client feedback.
Photoshop Document (.PSD)
The default master working format that preserves all layers, smart objects, masks, vector paths, and non-destructive metadata.
Large Document Format (.PSB)
An archival master format required for documents exceeding 2GB in file size or 30,000 pixels in width or height, which retains the full layer structure.
Portable Network Graphics (.PNG / PNG-24)
A web format supporting 24-bit RGB color depth and complete alpha channel background transparency using non-lossy compression.
Joint Photographic Experts Group (.JPG / .JPEG)
A lossy compressed web and photography format ideal for full-color continuous tone images; does not support transparency or layers.
Place Embedded
A command (File > Place Embedded…) that imports external source files directly into the host PSD document, ensuring the file remains self-contained without requiring linked asset files.
Place Linked
A command (File > Place Linked…) that connects dynamically to an external file, causing updates made to the source file to automatically update in the PSD.
Destructive vs. Non-Destructive Editing
Destructive edits permanently alter or replace original pixel data, whereas non-destructive edits preserve underlying original pixels so modifications can be adjusted or removed at any time.
Smart Objects
Container layers that shield original raster or vector pixel data, allowing non-destructive scaling, skewing, rotating, and filtering without image degradation.
Smart Filters
Non-destructive filter applications (e.g., Camera Raw Filter, Gaussian Blur) attached to a Smart Object layer, maintaining editable parameters and dedicated filter masks.
Layer Masks
Non-destructive masks linked to layers where black hides pixels, white reveals pixels, and shades of gray create partial transparency.
Adjustment Layers
Non-destructive color, tone, and contrast controls (such as Curves, Levels, Brightness/Contrast, and Hue/Saturation) positioned above content layers.
Tonal Range Sequence (Darkest to Lightest)
The strict 5-tier order of tonal values in image adjustment tools: 1. Blacks (Darkest), 2. Shadows, 3. Midtones, 4. Highlights, 5. Whites (Lightest).

Histogram Tonal Distribution
A graph that displays how dark and light tones appear in an image, plotting pixel distribution across tonal brightness levels from pure black on the left to pure white on the right across five tonal regions.
Contrast
The visual difference in brightness and color between dark and light regions of an image.
Depth of Field
The distance range in front of and behind the primary focal point that appears sharp and in focus.
Leading
The vertical space between baselines of text lines.
Kerning
Adjusting the space between two specific adjacent characters.
Tracking
Uniformly adjusting spacing across an entire block or word of text.
Baseline
The invisible horizontal line upon which text characters sit.
Ascender / Descender
Letter portions extending above the x-height (ascender, e.g., 'd') or extending below the baseline (descender, e.g., 'p').
Direct Selection Tool (White Arrow / A)
A vector tool that selects and moves individual vector anchor points and path direction handles.
Path Selection Tool (Black Arrow / A)
A vector tool that selects and transforms entire vector shape paths as whole objects.
Add Anchor Point Tool
A vector tool located in the Pen Tool sub-menu that inserts editable control nodes along an existing vector shape path.
Brush Jitter
A brush setting that introduces intentional randomness or variation to brush properties such as angle, size, opacity, or color.
Generative Fill
An AI-powered feature that adds, removes, or replaces image content non-destructively using natural language text prompts or automatic ambient scene matching.
Generative Expand
An AI feature that extends canvas borders using the Crop Tool and automatically populates the expanded area with contextually consistent AI-generated content.
Generative Layers
Dedicated layers created during Generative Fill or Expand operations that store multiple AI variations, allowing prompt modifications and variation switching.
Remove Tool
An AI smart brush that erases unwanted objects, clutter, or individuals from photographs while generating realistic background fill textures.
Sky Replacement
A tool that automatically detects and isolates sky regions, substituting them with chosen sky presets or custom images while adapting original foreground color temperature and lighting.
Adobe Firefly Commercial Safety
The training methodology ensuring models are trained exclusively on licensed Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain materials where copyrights have expired, ensuring commercial safety for end users.
