Consummatory rewards
→ Actually getting a reward (food, warmth, achieving a goal)
Incentive rewards
A cue that predicts a reward
Punishments
→ pain, deprivation, goal thwarting
Threats
→ cues you may not reach goal

Acts as a defense/vigilance system, especially responding to fear, threats, novelty, and uncertainty.
Goal hierarchies
Small goals to get larger goals
