What does photosynthesis require?
pigments
When plants gather the suns energy with light what molecules are they absorbing?
Pigments
Where are pigments found?
Inside a chloroplast
What is the main energy absorbing molecule in green plants?
Chlorophyll
What are carotenoids?
They are also pigments they look yellow, orange, and red
What does light contain a mixture of?
Wavelengths
How do we see color?
Light wave lengths are reflected off of object then bounce back to our eyes
Does chlorophyll absorb the green or reflect it?
Reflects
Why do some objects look black?
Black dye absorbs all of the wavelengths of light
Why does wearing a black t shirt in the summer make you feel warmer?
When wavelengths are absorbed on the black object so is the energy of the wave
Why do white objects appear white?
The dye in white objects reflects of the wavelengths of light
Why does wearing a white t shirt make you feel colder/cooler
Little energy is absorbed so wearing white clothing is colder/cooler
What are the 2 types of chlorophyll molecules?
Chlorophyll A is the main photosynthetic pigment and chlorophyll B
What are the other pigments called?
Xanthophyll(yellow or brown), Carotene (orange ir red), Cartenoids
Why do plants have other pigments like carotenoids?
Chlorophyll is not good at absorbing green light and the other pigments help absorb some wavelengths chlorophyll doesnt so plants can use more energy of the suns energy
Complete the sentance
Green leaves have both chlorophyll and cartenoids. but the huge amount of chlorophyll. the colors and leaves usually look green
All the time and hides
Why do the leaves change during fall and winter?
In fall the chlorophyll production slows as the trees shut down and photosynthesis stops for the winter then we see the carotenoid colors that are usually hudden by chlorophyll
