Ancient Greek Philosophers

Philosophers from ancient Greece who speculated on the nature of matter and proposed different assumptions on what it is made of.

Primal Matter

The idea that all materials are made up of one fundamental substance, according to ancient Greek philosophers.

Aristotle's View on Matter

Aristotle's belief that matter is composed of four elements (water, air, fire, and earth) and that there are no empty spaces in matter.

Democritus' Atomic Theory

The theory proposed by Democritus that matter is composed of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms.

Particulate Nature of Matter

The concept that matter is composed of discrete particles, with empty space between them, and that the particles are in constant motion.

Discrete Particles

Distinct particles that make up matter, such as atoms, molecules, or ions.

Empty Space between Particles

The idea that there are spaces between the particles that make up matter.

Motion of Particles

The constant movement of particles in matter, which varies in speed and direction depending on the kind of matter.

Forces between Particles

The attractive or repulsive forces that exist between the particles that make up matter.

States of Matter

The different forms matter can exist in, including solid, liquid, and gas, based on the arrangement, motion, and intermolecular forces of the particles.
