Level Line
A curved line in a level surface where all points are normal to gravity and equidistant from the center of the earth.
Horizontal Surface
A plane tangent to a level surface at a point, perpendicular to the plumb line at that point.
Horizontal Line
A straight line in a horizontal plane that is tangent to a level line at one point and perpendicular to gravity at that point.
Vertical Line
A line at any point that is parallel to the direction of gravity.
Mean Sea Level
An imaginary surface of the sea that is midway between high and low tides, used as a reference for ground elevations.
Datum
A convenient level surface coincident or parallel with mean sea level, used as a reference for elevations in a specific area.
Elevation
The vertical distance above or below mean sea level or any selected datum.
Difference in Elevation
The vertical distance between two level surfaces where the points lie.
