Explain the life cycle for pacific salmon spawn

The spawn is layed in river as it has better protection. When 3-6 years old the salmon go to the ocean to hunt for bigger food and grow. The salmon come back to the river to spawn + die

2
New cards

Semelparous

Reproduce once during their lifetime and die shortly after spawn

3

Explain this image

Explain this image

It is the watershed of the river salmon where early stuart is the farthest. The salmon return to their places of birth using olfactory senses the further they go up= highest

4
New cards

Explain this image

Explain this image

Explains the energy used when migrating. They stop eating when enter the river so energy is not wasted. They use EMG telemetry which is a transmission of electrical muscle activity data from a subject.

5
New cards

What are challenges to salmon migration

Low water levels, high temp, bears, commercial and sport flishing, hypoxia, pollution

6
New cards

Explain the image

Explain the image

Sampling populations during migration of how much protein & lipids they have. farther = high levels of sat fat. When going to spawn theres a decrease of protein and lipids

7
New cards

Explain the image

Explain the image

How much energy during migration, letting their muscles breakdown bc they arent eating. Energy-lipids decrease by the end.

8
New cards

Explain this graph

Explain this graph

Demonstrates the relationship bw populations depending on where individual is born and where they go.

Measured aerobic fitness and O2 consumpt of how far/much they can increase due to the environmental stress

Increase in basal level

9
New cards

Explain this

Explain this

The temperature effects on the fish. The fish wait at a certain point in the river and wait until temperatures are lower.

Effects include: fertilization success, development, physiological funct, rate of infection and metabolic efficiency

10
New cards

Why does water temperature matter

The effect of temperature of oxygen, less oxygen at warm temperatures which impacts ceullular function.

Temperature effects the rate of reaction with enzymes.
