Supply Hose
A hose that transfers water from its source to an apparatus fire pump.
Fire Stream
The term used in NFPA 1001 to refer to a stream of water produced from a hose; interchangeable with the term hose stream.
Hose Stream
The term used by IFSTA to refer to a stream of water produced from a hose; interchangeable with the term fire stream.
Pumper Outlet Nozzle
A large (4 or 4½-inch [100 mm or 115 mm]) discharge outlet on a standard fire hydrant, often referred to as a steamer connection.
NFPA 1963
Standard for Fire Hose Connections, which sets regulations for the number of threads per inch and the outside diameter of male threads on hydrant discharge outlets.
Dry-Barrel Hydrant
A fire hydrant designed for climates with freezing temperatures, whose main control valve is located underground below the frost line with an empty barrel when closed.
Wet-Barrel Hydrant
A fire hydrant designed for climates without prolonged subfreezing weather that maintains water in the barrel at all times and features horizontal compression valves at each outlet.
Hydrant Wrench
A tool with a pentagonal opening in its head used primarily to remove discharge caps from fire hydrants and to open fire hydrant operating valves.
Gate Valve
An appliance used to control flow from a hydrant by turning a screw-type handle to lower a baffle into the path of the water.
Hydrant Valve
A four-function appliance used in supply-line operations to lay additional lines, connect a supply pumper, boost line pressure without interrupting flow, or allow line charging before another pumper arrives.
Hose Clamp
A device used to stop the flow of water in a hoseline to prevent charging the hose bed, allow replacement of a burst section, or allow line extension without shutting off the water supply.
Water Hammer
A sudden surge in pressure within a water supply system or hose caused by closing a valve or hydrant too rapidly.
Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS)
A foam system that uses a direct injection proportioning system to mix Class A foam concentrate into water and adds compressed air before discharging through hoselines.
FOR VACUUM USE ONLY Hard Intake Hose
A type of hard intake hose designated exclusively for drafting operations from static water sources that must never be used for pressurized hydrant connections.
NFPA 1142
Standard on Water Supplies for Suburban and Rural Fire Fighting.
Static Water Source
An unpressurized water supply—such as a lake, pond, river, swimming pool, or portable water tank—that can be accessed through drafting operations.
Intake Strainer
A protective device attached to the drafting end of a hard-suction hose designed to prevent debris from entering the pump or clogging nozzle orifices.
Water Shuttle Operation
A rural water supply method where mobile water supply apparatus haul water from a fill site at a water source to a dump site near the fire incident.
