What is electromagnetic radiation?
Electromagnetic radiation is energy that travels through space as oscillating electric and magnetic fields.
types of electromagnetic radiation
Radio waves
Microwaves
Infrared radiation
Visible light
Ultraviolet radiation
X-rays
Gamma rays
What is wavelength λ?
is the distance from one point on a wave to the identical point on the next wave.
What is frequency? v
Frequency is the number of complete waves that pass a point per second.
what is amplitude ?
the height of a wave.
What is the relationship between wavelength and frequency?
are inversely related.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
The electromagnetic spectrum is the complete range of electromagnetic radiation.
relationship between long wavelength?
Long wavelength = low frequency = low energy
relationship between short wavelength?
Short wavelength = high frequency = high energy
Relationship of frequency and light
Frequency determines the type/color of light
Red
Longer wavelength
Lower frequency
Lower energy
Violet
Shorter wavelength
Higher frequency
Higher energy
equation for the speed of light
c = λν
solving for wavelength
λ = c/ν
solving for frequency
ν = c/λ light divided by wavelength
what is constructive interference ?
The waves line up and add together.- produces a bright area
what is destructive interference?
the waves cancel each other out.
→ produces a dark area
what does the double slit experiment tell us about light?
Electromagnetic radiation (light) is a wave.
what happens in the double slit experiment?
instead of seeing just two bright lines from the two slits, you get an alternating pattern of dark, light parts. -
what is the alternating pattern of dark and light parts called.
interference pattern
evidence that electromagnetic radiation is a wave.
Because diffraction and interference are behaviors of waves.
If light produces an interference pattern after passing through two slits, that is evidence that light behaves like a wave.
What would happen if light wasn’t a wave?
If light did not behave like a wave, you would expect light from each slit to simply travel toward the wall. Two bright areas.
what is diffraction?
waves spread out when they pass through a narrow opening.
What determines the energy of waves?
the amplitude
