The new right explains youth deviance and crime as the result of a breakdown in traditional social institutions - especially the family.

• Boys, in particular, lack discipline and positive masculine guidance.

This can lead to anti-social behaviour and gang involvement. He linked this top the growth of an ‘underclass’ dependent on welfare.

• Murray argues that growing up in a single-parent family is more damaging and a greater indicator of criminality than poverty is.

 

He argues that the underclass do not want to work and see dependency on welfare as a positive lifestyle choice.
