Numerator
The top part of a fraction, representing the number of parts being considered.
Denominator
The bottom part of a fraction, indicating the total number of equal parts.
Proper fraction
A fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator.
Improper fraction
A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator.
Mixed fraction
A whole number combined with a proper fraction.
Reducing fractions
Dividing both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor to simplify the fraction.
Reciprocate
To invert a fraction, swapping the numerator and the denominator.
Common denominator
A shared multiple of the denominators of two or more fractions used to simplify addition or subtraction.
Ratio
A relationship between two numbers, often expressed as 'a to b' or 'a:b'.
Proportion
An equation that states two ratios are equal.
Percentage
A way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100.
BEDMAS
An acronym for Brackets, Exponents, Division and Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction, which spells out the order of operations in mathematics.
Transposing equations
The process of rearranging an equation to isolate a variable.
Converting fractions to decimals
Dividing the numerator by the denominator to obtain a decimal value.
Converting decimals to fractions
Writing the decimal over 1, then multiplying the numerator and denominator by a power of ten until the decimal point is moved to the right.
