Social Construction
Something that society believes to be a fact e.g. the idea that boys wear blue.
“Nature vs Nurture”
The debate on whether social behaviour is shaped by biology or socialisation.
Gender
The social idea of masculinity or femininity.
Norm
A social rule that dictates your behaviour.
Value
Something that you believe in that shapes your identity e.g. it is wrong to steal.
Peer Group
A group of people of similar age or status.
Patriarchy
The feminist theory of a male dominated society.
Culture
The beliefs, ideas and practices of a society or group.
Ethnicity
A shared cultural identity e.g. language, and customs.
Status
A person’s position in a society in terms of power.
Social Class
A division of a society based on social and economic status.
Socialisation
The process of passing on norms, values and beliefs.
