person not thinking of changing, no intention of changing because they dont think their is a problem

pt thinking about chaning, recognizing that their may be a problem

contemplation
preparation
pt intends to take action soon may be making small changes or creating a plan
“I'm going to quit next month, and I bought nicotine patches.” is a example of
preparation
action
pt actively doing it and changing their behavior
“I quit smoking three weeks ago.” is a example of
action
maintenance
pt has maintained the change and working to keep it going and relapse
“I quit smoking eight months ago.” is a example of
maintenance
