Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
A part of the peripheral nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
The brain and spinal cord, responsible for processing information.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The part of the nervous system that connects the CNS to the limbs and organs.
Sensory (afferent) division
Transmits sensory information to the CNS.
Motor (efferent) division
Transmits motor commands from the CNS to the body.
Somatic Nervous System
Part of the PNS that controls voluntary movements.
Sympathetic division
Part of the ANS that prepares the body for 'fight or flight'.
Parasympathetic division
Part of the ANS that promotes 'rest and digest' functions.
Acetylcholine (ACh)
A neurotransmitter used in both the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.
Norepinephrine (NE)
A neurotransmitter primarily used in the sympathetic nervous system.
Effectors
Organs or cells that respond to nerve signals.
Ganglion
A cluster of nerve cell bodies in the PNS.
Preganglionic fibers
Nerve fibers that carry signals from the CNS to a ganglion.
Postganglionic fibers
Nerve fibers that carry signals from ganglia to effectors.
Neurotransmitter
Chemical messengers that transmit signals across a synapse.
Cholinergic fibers
Nerve fibers that release acetylcholine.
Adrenergic fibers
Nerve fibers that release norepinephrine.
Epinephrine
A hormone also known as adrenaline, released during fight or flight response.
Blood vessels
The channels through which blood flows to deliver nutrients and oxygen.
Visceral organs
Internal organs, particularly those within the abdomen.
Neurotransmitter activity
The effect of neurotransmitters on target cells or organs.
