1
New cards

MDO: M

M = Maintenance fluids

Replenish normal intake if the patient isn't eating or drinking

2
New cards

MDO: D

D = Deficit

Replenish hydration if dehydrated

The Deficit is the calculated amount that the patient is dehydrated

3
New cards

MDO: O

O = Ongoing losses

Replenish excessive ongoing losses

If we don’t replenish these, the patient will become dehydrated again

Fluid Deficit (L) = Body Weight (kg) x % Dehydration (as a decimal)

In real life, were estimating dehydration values

goat who weighs 100 kg is 5% dehydrated, First– turn the % into a decimal → 0.05

Fluid Deficit (L) = 100 kg X 0.05 = 5 L

5
New cards

Fluid deficit: per hour either 12 or 24

Fluid Deficit (L) = 100 kg X 0.05 = 5 L

Turn this into a “per hour” rate. Options: Give over 12 or 24 hours

5 L = 5000 ml

5000 ml ÷ 24 hr = 208.33 ml/hr

M + D example

Maintenance calculation: 500 ml/kg/day

50 ml/kg/day X 100 kg = 5000 ml/day ÷ 24 hours = 208 ml/hr

Fluid Deficit (L) = 100 kg X 0.05 = 5 L = , 5000 ml ÷ 24 hr = 208.33 ml/hr

M (208 ml/hr) + D (208 ml/hr) = 416 ml/hr
