どうしても + 〜 Phrase・どうしても + 〜 Neg. Phrase

no matter what 〜 ・ 〜 at any cost ・・・"〜 = absolute last resort”

私はどうしても自分の家が欲しい。

I really want to have my own house (to the point I’d do anything).

他の問題はできたのだが、この問題だけはどうしても解けない。

I was able to do the other problems, but this one I cannot solve no matter how hard I try.

どうしても来られない時は連絡してください。

Please let me know if you absolutely cannot make it.

[Short Verb]・[Noun + の]・[な-Adj + な]・[い-Adj] + ふりをする

to pretend, to act as if 〜

彼は聞こえないふりをした。

He pretended to not hear.

彼女が一所懸命作ってくれた料理なので、まずいとは言えず、美味しそうなふりをした。

Not being able to say the food she worked so hard to make for me was bad, I pretended that is tasted good.

ふと + action (〜)

suddenly 〜, accidentally 〜, unexpectedly 〜, unintentionally 〜

ふと街で彼にあった。

I met him in the street by chance.

[N]・[V stem] + がち

tend to 〜, tendency to 〜, frequently, often, to do something easily

• usually used for something negative

私は、仕事でミスしがちです。

I tend to make a lot of mistakes at work.

[V stem] + がたい

very difficult to 〜, hard to 〜 (more extreme than 〜にくい)

信じがたいことだが、これは事実だ。

This may be hard to believe, but this is the truth.

許しがたいことです。

This is an unforgivable act.

[V stem]・[N] + 気味（ぎみ）

〜like, 〜looking, tending to 〜

• smth looks/seems to be a certain way - usually temporary, slight physical/visible sign

緊張気味の顔をしていた。

They had a face that looked like they were nervous.

• “looks like” (external appearance to observer)

ちょっと疲れ気味です。

I am feeling a little tired right now (showing signs of tiredness)/.

• “Slight Tendency”・”Feeling a Bit Of…” : ongoing internal state, recurring minor condition, or a habit starting to form

each, every, at intervals of 〜

バスは１０分ごとに通っている。

The buses run every 10 minutes.

彼は6か月ごとに新作の小説を出している。

He puts out a new short novel every 6 months.

degree, extent, bounds, upper limit

君ほど美しい人はいません！

There is no one that rivals your beauty.

死ぬほどのどがかわいている。

I'm so thirsty I could die.

今年ほど雨の降った年はなかった。

It rained more this year than any other year.
