Research Flashcards
What research design is utilized in this study and why?
A quantitative experimental research design using a comparative experimental approach. It was chosen to evaluate and compare the coagulation potential of individual and combined seed powders and a commercial benchmark under standardized, controlled conditions.
What are the independent and dependent variables of the study?
The independent variable is the coagulant treatment composition (individual seed powders, Two-seed combinations, three-seed combinations, and Commercially available coagulant).
The dependent variables are turbidity reduction, settling time, and observable changes in water characteristics.
How many total experimental conditions are being evaluated in the study?
A total of 21 conditions: 3 single-seed treatments, 9 dual-seed combinations, 7 triple-seed combinations (making 19 natural coagulant treatments), 1 commercial coagulant benchmark (positive control), and 1 untreated water sample (negative control).
Why is the total mass dosage of coagulant kept constant across all treatments?
To ensure that any observed differences in clarification performance and settling behavior are directly attributable to the relative composition and ratio of the seed powders rather than differences in total coagulant concentration.
What special preparation procedure is required for Tamarind seeds prior to grinding?
Because of their hard outer seed coat, Tamarind seeds undergo controlled heating on an induction cooker with continuous stirring, followed by mechanical breaking using a hammer to expose the inner kernels before grinding.
How is turbidity reduction measured and mathematically calculated?
Initial and final turbidity are measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTUNTU) using a turbidity tester. Turbidity reduction percentage is calculated using the formula:
Turbidity Reduction (%)=Initial Turbidity-Final Turbidity over Initial Turbidity×100
How is settling time measured and operationalized?
A timer starts immediately after standardized mixing ends, and the elapsed time is recorded in minutes until the treated water reaches a predetermined operational endpoint based on visible particle settling.
What scoring criteria are used to evaluate observable changes in water characteristics?
A standardized 1–3 observation scale assessing three parameters: water clarity (1 = highly cloudy, 3 = substantially clearer),
visible suspended particles (1 = large amount, 3 = little to none), and overall visual appearance (1 = little improvement, 3 = substantial improvement).
What are the roles of the positive and negative controls in this experiment?
The untreated water sample (negative control) establishes the baseline sedimentation rate without any coagulant, while the commercially available coagulant (positive control) provides an industry benchmark to evaluate the efficacy of the natural seed treatments.
What statistical tools will be used to analyze the experimental data?
Descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) summarize the replicate trials. A One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tested at α=0.05 determines whether significant differences exist among treatment groups, followed by Tukey's Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) post-hoc test to identify specific pairwise differences.
