The Five Regions of Virginia

The five geographic divisions of Virginia: Coastal Plain/Tidewater, Piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau.

Coastal Plain / Tidewater

A geographic region of Virginia featuring flat land, located near the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, east of the Fall Line.

Piedmont

A geographic region of Virginia featuring rolling hills, located west of the Fall Line and east of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fall Line

The natural border between the Coastal Plain (Tidewater) and Piedmont regions where waterfalls and rapids prevent further river travel upstream.

Algonquian

The primary Indigenous language group spoken in the Coastal Plain / Tidewater region of Virginia, which included the Powhatan chiefdom.

Siouan

An Indigenous language group spoken primarily in the Piedmont region of Virginia, which included the Monacan tribe.

Iroquoian
