what is perfusion?
the circulation of blood through an organ or tissue in sufficient amounts to meet the needs of the cells
hypoperfusion
inadequate blood flow to tissues and cells
hypovolemic shock
inadequate circulating volume
cardiogenic shock
heart cannot pump effectively enough to maintain perfusion
obstructive shock
something physically prevents effective circulationi
important causes of obstructive shock
tension pneumothorax, cardiac tamponade, massive pulmonary embolism
pulmonary edema
developed from cardiogenic shock when blood backs up into the pulmonary circulation
distributive shock
vascular system dilates abnormally and becomes excessively permeable, creating inadequate effective circulation
what are the three types of distributive shock?
anaphylatic, neurogenic, and septic
septic shock
severe infection produces systemic circulatory abnormalities
anaphylactic shock
a severe allergic reaction can produce vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and potentially life-threatening airway and respiratory problems
neurogenic shock
loss of sympathetic vascular tone, often associated with spinal cord injury, causes widespread vasodilation
