Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)
Volume of air that can be forcefully inspired following a normal, quiet inspiration.
Often used by singers, public speakers.
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV)
Volume of air that can be forcefully expired a following a normal, quiet expiration.
Used when trying to finish a long sentence in one breath.
Tidal Volume (TV)
The volume of air we breathe in and out during a cycle of respiration.
Changes quickly with physical exertion (ex: 600 - 750 ml (quiet breathing) to 2030 ml (physical activity) in males).
Residual Volume (RV)
Even when you have exhausted your expiratory reserve volume, you still have left a bit of air, and this is your residual volume.
Usually makes up about 20% of your TLC.
Vital Capacity (VC)
The maximum amount of air that a person can exhale after having inhaled as deeply as possible.
TV + IRV + ERV = VC
Note: it does not include RV (not under our control).
Total Lung Capacity (TLC)
The amount of air in the lungs after maximal inhalation.
The total amount of air the lungs can hold.
TV + IRV = ERV = RV = TLC
VC + RV = TLC
