Comprehensive vocabulary flashcards covering column classifications, Euler and Johnson buckling formulas, effective lengths, slenderness ratios, and eccentric loading.
Column (Strut)
A slender structural member loaded in axial compression, such as an internal combustion engine connecting rod, a building column, or a truss member.
Buckling Failure
A stability failure (rather than a material strength failure) where a long column deflects laterally and collapses at a compressive stress well below its yield strength (Sy).
Critical Buckling Load (Pcr)
The smallest axial load capable of holding a column in a slightly bent shape, above which the column experiences sudden, catastrophic collapse with no visible warning.
Elastically Stable Column
A column that returns to its straight configuration when a small lateral disturbance is removed, occurring because the applied load P<Pcr and its internal restoring elastic moment overcomes P⋅y.
Short Block Compressive Failure
Failure by material yielding occurring when F/A reaches the compressive yield strength (Syc), governed by maximum-shear theory along 45∘ planes.
Compressive Yield Strength (Syc)
The compressive stress at yield; approximately equal to tensile yield strength (Syt) for ductile materials (Syc≈Syt), but substantially greater than Syt for brittle materials (Syc≫Syt).
Slenderness Ratio (Le/ρ)
The ratio of the column effective length (Le) to its least radius of gyration (ρ), serving as the governing parameter to classify a column as short, intermediate, or long.
Radius of Gyration (ρ)
A cross-sectional geometric property defined by ρ=I/A (or I=Aρ2), reflecting how area is distributed relative to the bending axis.
Radius of Gyration of a Solid Circular Section
Given by ρ=4d (derived from I=64πd4 and A=4πd2), leading to a slenderness ratio of Le/ρ=d4Le.
Radius of Gyration of a Hollow Circular Tube
Defined by ρ=4D2+di2, where D is the outer diameter and di is the inner diameter.
Short Column Criterion
A column defined by Le/ρ<10, where the critical buckling stress equals approximately the material yield strength (σcr≈Sy) via simple compression.
Weakest Buckling Axis
The cross-sectional axis associated with the largest slenderness ratio (Le/ρ), which yields the lowest critical stress (σcr) and determines the direction of lateral buckling under concentric loading.
Effective Length (Le)
The distance between two consecutive inflection points (pin joints) in the buckled column shape, used to convert any set of end boundary conditions into an equivalent pin-ended column.
Effective Length: Pinned-Pinned Column
The effective length for a column pinned at both ends: Le=L.
Effective Length: Fixed-Pinned Column
The effective length for a column fixed at one end and pinned at the other: theoretical Le=0.707L (AISC standard specifies Le=0.80L).
Effective Length: Fixed-Fixed Column
The effective length for a column fixed at both ends: theoretical Le=0.5L (AISC standard specifies Le=0.65L).
Effective Length: Fixed-Guided Column
The effective length for a column with both ends fixed against rotation but one end free to translate laterally: theoretical Le=L (AISC standard specifies Le=1.2L).
Effective Length: Fixed-Free Column (Flagpole)
The effective length for a cantilever column fixed at one end and entirely free at the other: theoretical Le=2L (AISC standard specifies Le=2.1L).
Engine Connecting Rod Boundary Conditions
A configuration where the rod acts as pinned-pinned about the pin axis (Lex=L), and acts as built-in/fixed at both ends in the perpendicular plane (Ley=0.5L).
Lateral Bracing
A support installed in the column's weak direction that halves Le (and therefore Le/ρ) in that plane, significantly increasing the overall buckling load.
Euler Critical Load Formula
The governing equation for the critical buckling load of long elastic columns: Pcr=Le2π2EI.
Euler Critical Stress Formula
The critical buckling stress for long columns: σcr=(Le/ρ)2π2E.
Material Yield Insensitivity in Euler Range
The phenomenon whereby Sy does not appear in Euler's formula; thus, high-strength steel provides no load advantage over mild steel in the long column regime because both share approximately E≈200GPa.
Tangent Point Slenderness Ratio ((Le/ρ)tp)
The slenderness ratio separating intermediate and long column behavior where the Johnson parabola meets the Euler curve tangentially, given by (Le/ρ)tp=Sy2π2E.
Tangent Point Critical Stress
The critical stress at the transition point between the Johnson and Euler formulas, which is exactly half of the yield strength: σcr=2Sy.
Johnson Parabola Formula
An empirical formula fitted by J.B. Johnson to experimental data for intermediate columns (10<Le/ρ<(Le/ρ)tp): σcr=Sy[1−4π2ESy(Le/ρ)2].
Factor of Safety Application in Column Design
A safety margin incorporated by sizing for allowable stress P/A=nσcr or design load Pcr=n×P, applied exactly once.
Euler Solid Round Rod Shortcut
A closed-form formula to check or determine the required diameter of a solid circular rod in the Euler range: d=(π3E64nPLe2)1/4.
Johnson Solid Round Rod Shortcut
A closed-form formula to check or determine the required diameter of a solid circular rod in the Johnson range: d=πSy4nP+π2E4SyLe2.
Secant Formula
An analytical expression used for columns subjected to eccentric axial compressive loads: σcr=APcr=1+(ρ2ec)sec((ρLe)4AEPcr)Sy.
Eccentricity Parameters (e and c)
In eccentric column analysis, e is the distance from the load line of action to the section centroid, and c is the distance from the centroid to the extreme outer fiber in the bending plane.
Local Buckling (Wrinkling)
A failure mode where thin walls of hollow or structural sections wrinkle locally like a pineapple prior to overall column buckling, addressed in structural codes using an effective reduced cross-sectional area.
Johnson Solid Rod Algebraic Trick
The technique of multiplying the Johnson equation through by d2 so that it becomes linear in d2, allowing one to solve directly for d2 and then take the square root.
