where does the krebs cycle take place
matrix of the mitochondria
what does the Krebs cycle involve
coenzymes NAD, CoA, FAD
how many stages of krebs are there
6 stages
stage 1
CoA and acetate detach
CoA can now be reused
Acetate (2C) joins with oxaloacetate (4C) to make CITRATE (6C)
stage 2 of the krebs cycle
Citrate is decarboxylated and dehydrogenated to form a 5C compound
( a co2 molecule is released)
The pair of hydrogen atoms are accepted by NAD to become reduced NAD
stage 3
the 5C compound is decarboxylated and dehydrogenated to from a 4C compound
co2 is released
the pair of hydrogen atoms are accepted by NAD to become reduced NAD
stage 4
the 4C compound is changed into another 4C compound using CoA enzyme.
this enzyme is reused in this part of the cycle again and again
a molecule of ATP is produced through substrate level phosphorylation of ATP
stage 5
the second 4C compound is converted into a third 4C compound
the pair of hydrogen atoms are accepted by FAD to become reduced FAD
stage 6
the third 4C compound is then dehydrogenated back into oxaloacetate 4C
the pair of hydrogen atoms are accepted by NAD to become reduced NAD
krebs cycle diagram

products of krebs per cycle
3 reduced NAD
1 reduced FAD
2 co2
1 ATP
products of krebs per molecule of glucose
6 redcued NAD
2 reduced FAD
4 Co2
2 ATP
why can krebs cycle repeat
the acceptor molecule oxaloacetate is regenerated throughout the reaction so it can start all over again by adding another acetyl CoA
