Fault
A fracture in the Earth's crust through which movement has occurred.
Earthquake
A sudden and violent shaking of the ground caused by the movement of tectonic plates.
Hanging Wall
The side of a non-vertical fault that occurs above the fault plane.
Foot Wall
The side of a non-vertical fault that is found below the fault plane.
Seismic Activity
The occurrence and distribution of earthquakes in a region.
Pacific Ring of Fire
An area of intense seismic activity circling the Pacific Ocean characterized by volcanoes and frequent earthquakes.
Normal Faults
Faults with a fault plane angle of less than 45° where the hanging wall moves downward relative to the footwall.
Reverse/Thrust Faults
Faults with a fault plane angle greater than 45° where the hanging wall moves upward relative to the footwall.
Strike-Slip Faults
Faults that are nearly vertical with minimal inclination, where blocks move laterally.
Plate Boundaries
Regions where tectonic plates interact, most earthquakes occur here.
Seismic Waves
Waves that travel through the Earth, causing ground shaking and damage.
Active Faults
Faults that have experienced recent movement and pose a high risk for earthquakes.
Inactive Faults
Faults that haven’t moved in a long time but could still pose a potential risk.

The major active fault system running through the Philippines.
Subduction Zone
Where the Philippine plate subducts beneath the Eurasian and Pacific plates, causing volcanic activity.
Transform Boundaries
Where the Philippine plate interacts with other plates, leading to strike-slip faults.
Convergent Boundaries
Regions where plates converge, forming complex, active fault systems.
