authority

the right to rule

legitimacy

a society's belief that their ruler or government has the right to rule

power

the ability to get people to behave in certain ways even when people don't want to behave in those ways. think of it as the ability to rule.

sovereignty

the supreme and ultimate authority within a territory. the buck stops with whoever has sovereignty.

limited government

a government limited by a Constitution.

natural rights

rights that all people have everywhere that can't be taken away by anyone or anything.

popular sovereignty

a government is made/controlled by the people. (people vote and participate in the government)

republicanism

people choose leaders and vote on who can be in the government.

social contract

an agreement between the government and the people. (people give up some rights in exchange for the protection of other rights).

Bureaucracy

a group of appointed governing officials in power.

citizen participation

requiring those affected by some government program to participate in its formulation

city-state

an independent sovereign city.

community control

allowing individual neighborhoods in big cities to govern themselves.

democracy

the rule of the many

direct/participatory democracy

a government in which all or most citizens participate directly by either holding office or making policy.

majoritarian politics

a policy in which almost everybody benefits and almost everybody pays

A city-state in ancient Greece.

interest groups

a group of people trying to change policy to help their cause or interest. they provide data, write laws/bills.

client politics

a policy in which one small group benefits and everybody pays

a policy in which almost everyone benefits and one small group pays

the activity, negotiation, argument, discussion, application of force, or persuasion by which an issue is agitated or settled.
