Addiction
An everyday term for compulsive substance use (And sometimes for dysfunctional behavior patterns such as gambling) that continues despite harmful consequences.

Drugs that depress central nervous system activity reducing anxiety but if to much is taken it can impair memory and judgement.
Depressants
Drugs that reduce neural activity and slow body functions.
Hallucinogens
Psychedelic drugs that distort perceptions and evoke sensory images in the absence of sensory input.
Near-Death Experience
An altered state of consciousness reported after a close brush with death.
Opioids
Opium and its derivatives they depress neutral activity temporarily lessening pain and anxiety.
Psychoactive Drug
A chemical substance that alters the brain causing changes in perception and moods.
Resting Potential
When a neuron is charged up and waiting to send a message inside the axon.
Reuptake Inhibitor
Block the reabsorption of neurotransmitters.
Stimulants
Drugs that excite neutral activity and speed up body functions.
Substance Use Disorder
A disorder characterized by continued substance use.
Tolerance
The diminishing effect with regular use of the same dose of a drug requiring the user to take larger and larger doses before experiencing the drug’s effect.
Withdrawal
The discomfort and distress that follows discontinuing and addictive drug or behavior.
