Main Idea
What the entire text or a single paragraph is mostly about, which can be written in one or two sentences.
Supporting Details
Examples or details in a text that connect back to and support the main idea.
Summary
A shortened version of a text that retells the important parts in your own words.
B-M-E
An acronym standing for Beginning, Middle, and End, used to structure events in a fiction summary.
Beginning (Fiction Summary)
The part of a fiction summary where the characters, setting, and problem are identified.
Middle (Fiction Summary)
The part of a fiction summary that tells major events and how characters try to solve the problem.
Ending (Fiction Summary)
The part of a fiction summary that explains how the problem is resolved.
Inference
A conclusion supported by text evidence (text clues) and background knowledge.
Author's Purpose
The reason an author wrote a text.
Purpose to Inform
An author's purpose when giving facts about a topic.
Purpose to Describe
An author's purpose when using sensory language to paint a picture.
Purpose to Explain
An author's purpose when teaching steps or giving reasons.
Purpose to Entertain
An author's purpose when writing a funny or engaging story.
Purpose to Persuade
An author's purpose when trying to change a reader's opinion.
Theme
The big idea or larger message readers take from a story that can apply across multiple stories.
