Endomembrane System
A network of membrane-enclosed structures, including the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and vesicles.
Nucleus
An organelle containing genetic material (DNA) with instructions for protein production, surrounded by a double membrane.
Nuclear Pores
Structures in the nuclear double membrane that allow material to go in and out of the nucleus.
Nuclear Lamina
A structural layer that supports the nuclear membrane.
Diffuse Chromatin
A form of DNA combined with protein present when the cell is growing and not dividing.
Compacted Chromatin
A form of chromatin that is visible only during cell division.
Nucleolus
A darkly stained portion of the nucleus that is responsible for making ribosomes.
Ribosomes
Cellular structures composed of RNA and protein that serve as protein factories; they are not surrounded by a membrane and can be free-floating or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum (Rough ER).
