Broca’s Area
The association area found on the left hemisphere of the frontal lobe that is responsible for the production of speech and expression
Wernicke’s Area
The association area found on the left hemisphere of the temporal lobe that is responsible for the understanding and processing of language
Aphasia
The inability to speak or understand language
Receptive Aphasia
A type of aphasia in which the individual is unable to understand sensory input
Expressive Aphasia
A type of aphasia in which the individual is unable to understand complicated sentences with multiple elements, and have difficulty speaking or writing normal syntax
Global Aphasia
A type of aphasia in which the individual shows both expressive and receptive aphasia
Beta Rhythm
An EEG pattern consisting of a relatively flat and even activity line corresponding to alertness
Alpha Rhythm
An EEG pattern consisting of a flat activity line with overall larger oscillations corresponding to relaxation and drowsiness while being awake
NREM Sleep
The preliminary stages to REM sleep that occur when first falling to sleep, spanning 30 to 35 minutes in the N1, N2, and N3 stages
REM (Paradoxical) Sleep
Very deep sleep that is difficult to arouse and shows difficulty of arousal, but there is intense brain activity similar to that of being awake
N1 Sleep
The first stage of transformation from alertness to sleep that corresponds to very light sleep
N2 Sleep
The second stage of NREM sleep that shows transitioning into deeper and slow wave sleep
N3 (Slow Wave) Sleep
The deepest stage of NREM sleep that shows large, slow waves of activity
Theta Waves
An EEG pattern consisting of a mostly flat activity line with lower frequency, slower waves that illustrate a transition into light sleep from awakeness
Sleep Spindles
An EEG pattern consisting of a dense, high frequency segment of brain waves that are characteristic of N2 sleep
K Complexes
An EEG pattern consisting of one large spike and fall in brain activity that is characteristic of N2 sleep
