What is the test for hydrogen?
Will make a "squeaky pop" with a glowing splint
What is the test for oxygen?
Will relight a glowing splint
What is the test for carbon dioxide?
Turns limewater milky
What is the test for hydrogen chloride?
1. Damp blue litmus paper turns red
2. Glass rod dipped in conc. ammonia will produce white fumes
What is the test for ammonia?
1. Damp red litmus paper turns blue
2. Glass rod dipped in conc. HCl will produce white fumes
How do you carry out a flame test?
1. Clean a nichrome wire loop with HCl by holding it in the (blue) bunsen flame until no colour is produced
2. Dip the wire loop into the HCl again followed by a sample of the metal compound
3. Place the loop back into the flame and record the colour
What colour flame does lithium produce?
crimson
What colour flame does sodium produce?
yellow/orange
What colour flame does potassium produce?
lilac
What colour flame does calcium produce?
brick red
What colour flame does barium produce?
apple green
What colour flame does copper produce?
green/blue
What is the test for sulphate ions?
White precipitate forms with barium chloride
How are halide ions tested for?
Silver nitrate solution and conc./dilute ammonium solution
What results does chloride produce from the test for halides?
- White precipitate
- Does redissolve in dilute ammonia
- Does redissolve in conc. ammonia
What results does bromide produce from the test for halides?
- Cream precipitate
- Does not redissolve in dilute ammonia
- Does redissolve in conc. ammonia
What results does iodide produce from the test for halides?
- Yellow precipitate
- Does not redissolve in dilute ammonia
- Does not redissolve in conc. ammonia
How are carbonate ions identified?
When reacted with dilute acid fizzing is observed and carbon dioxide gas is given off
How is iodine identified?
Iodine will change from orange-brown to blue-black when reacted with starch
